It is a Game of Fundamentals
The Canadian PGA recently announced the winners of its 2009 National awards for exceptional and dedicated service. A National Selection committee evaluated nominations from more than 3,600 Canadian PGA Members coast-to-coast and recognized winners in each of the four categories and …
This year’s winner in the teaching category was Clublink Academy’s Sean Casey.
Whether he is showing us how to make it fly, or answering a bunch of reader email questions (which he did – right here – last November after winning the 2009 Ontario Teacher of the Year), Sean is always a great resource for some sage golf advice. So, the timing just seems right, once again, to provide all of you with a little more wisdom from one of Canada’s finest. Bookmark when ready!
You hear the word ‘fundamentals’ thrown around in the golf world quite often but what exactly are they?
Well, that is debatable but I like to break them up into 2 categories:
1) Set up fundamentals (static)
2) Swing fundamentals (dynamic)
Both are essential to becoming a good golfer and having any level of consistency in your game.
This particular article focuses on the ‘Set Up Fundamentals.’ I believe they must come before the swing fundamentals because your set up absolutely effects the way you swing.
The best players in the world have good set up positions. That is not to say that they all set up the same, but there are more commonalities than differences when compared to players who struggle with the game.
The set up fundamentals that should be improved and checked often are:
- Grip
- Posture
- Alignment
- Ball position
Static fundamentals are much easier to change and can make both an immediate and positive impact on your game.
This season, make an effort to become more aware of your set up and integrate these fundamentals into your pre-shot process before every shot! It will lead to a more consistent swing and, subsequently, increase your enjoyment of the game.
