In response to my editorial feature in September’s eNews entitled Here is Why I Enjoy Playing Golf below is just one of the many great (and interesting) replies with regards to a request for you (our readers) to tell their story.
Below is David Prang’s tale of comaraderie — this is why he golfs.
Thanks for the opportunity to share my story!
I started playing golf at my grandparent’s cottage course, the Bruce Beach Golf Club, near Kincardine, ON, with a 4 iron and a 7 iron – because those were the two newest looking clubs in our cottage set. I didn’t play 18 holes with a full set of clubs until high school, but really got into golf workingat Northridge Public Golf Course in Brantford during university.
At university, I met my foursome: Simon, Daryl, and Bryan. We eventually started golfing together after we graduated – our first round was at Bruce Beach, and we have made it an annual event each year (called Camp David), peppered with as much additional golf as we could squeeze in each summer through weddings, bachelor parties, engagement parties, buying houses, moving, traveling, canoe trips, and changing jobs.
Simon was on my residence floor in first year, and is the responsible, coordinated golfer. He has purchased a few sets of clubs through the years, played some fancy courses, and taken lessons through a golf pro friend of ours. He can shoot low, or go high, but never gets too excited about it either way – he genuinely enjoys getting out for a round with the boys. He has carded a double eagle 2 on a par five – by shooting at the wrong flag on a double green, but mistakenly hitting the correct one! That’s why we love golf!
Daryl was Simon’s roommate in residence, and one of the nicest, most genuine people I know. Also one of the hardest working. A natural baseball player, and committed runner, he was the last to come to golf. When he’s on, he is
consistently in the fairway at acceptable distances and a good partner to have if you are long and erratic. He can also have days where 9 holes is enough!Bryan first connected with Simon during university, but has since become my brother-in-law as of last weekend! Bryan is the life-long golfer of our group, who has had the memberships as a kid, but no longer plays as much as he would like. He can have a bad couple of holes, but always seems to come out with the low score in the group.
He is conservative – you see a lot more 3 iron than driver on tricky holes.Me, I’m Dave. I have the most dynamic game – that is, can go long, knock in crazy putts, and try ridiculous shots, but also tally up some lofty scores. I live by the adage, “I’m only playing this shot once today”, and like to see what I can do.
All of us share organizing duties – and are equally challenged at making regular schedules, but we enjoy joking about that, especially during our regular after-round beverage.
These guys are why I keep golfing – and why I enjoy the game no matter where or how I’m playing!
Thanks David. And thanks to all of the others who responded.
