Lazy, hazy HOT Days of Summer

Too hot for golf?

The past couple of weeks have been record setters for temperature and humidity. Have you stopped playing golf? I hope not. Take lots of water, book an early morning tee time, wear lots of sunscreen, a hat and some lightweight attire. And maybe instead of walking, use a cart – although I am not a big proponent of golf carts. If you get a little tired or feel overheated, stop for a few minutes and rest in the shade. I know the guys behind you won’t be in a real hurry either and, if they are, let them play through.

The Canadian Open

Looks like our good friend and tournament director Bill Paul is putting together a stellar field for this year’s Canadian Open at St. George’s in Etobicoke. No Tiger, no Phil, no problem! The dates are July 19-25. Looks like a fun week with lots of great golf and a few festivities along Islington Avenue. Pick a day and enjoy the competition (and the golf course).  If you’re wondering where it is and or how to get there we’ve posted the map and some details [HERE].  Should be a fun week.

Beacon Hall

Beacon Hall

Had the distinct pleasure to play at Beacon Hall Golf Club over in the Aurora area recently. What a spectacular golf course and extremely well conditioned by Superintendent Paul Scenna. The course actually plays like two separate golf courses.  The front nine being tree lined with lots of elevation changes while the back nine is linksy with wispy fescue lining every fairway. A great variety of golf holes, some much tougher than others. As I normally do, I played the white tees and I was very comfortable with my booming 220 yard drives. Media friend Randy MacDonald was my playing partner and we were blessed with a wonderful hostess, Debbie (a club member) and also a caddie (Leslie) a charming grade 11 student who caddies all summer to make a little extra cash. Both Debbie and Leslie kept us ‘in the know’ on every shot! Fun day and thanks to GM David Main for hosting a first class event. (Check David’s column in the magazine, it’s called MAINLY GOLF).

Summer Reading

The Summer issue of our magazine is available as of today. Again it is packed with interesting golf stuff, something for everyone. The cover story is a ‘must read’ for those who want to protect their backs and play this game for a long, long  time.  Back again is the popular PROSpectives section, an inside look at questions from our readers. Ron Webb has an interesting history up at South Muskoka and our regular columnists are all ‘back in and on their game’ with new ideas and opinions.

Warning: they do not last long.
