Keep it Simple
Beginner’s need simple instructions.
BUSTED
Throughout my career, both as a player and an instructor, I have always been told “Keep it Simple” when it comes to beginners. Unfortunately lacking pertinent information leads to the development of bad habits.
Have you ever been to a beginner golf clinic where the only thing taught is grip and posture? Although grip and posture are important, leaving out the basic fundamental – you must hit the ball first and the ground second – often leads to beginners trying to ‘lift’ the ball in the air. Trying to lift the ball leads to bad habits that could have been avoided by simply stating the proper way to strike the ball.
Golf is a complex sport; however adults need to have detail because of our ability to use abstract thought. The more myths you bust on your first day, the better the odds one will have of making a good swing.
The golf swing, along with any other movement in sport, is a sequence. By understanding that sequence, why that sequence works and how to move within that sequence prior to hitting a ball, provides the upper hand on anyone living by the old adage ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’.
