Review & Resolutions
January is a quieter time around the GolfScene offices so we thought we’d take a brief look back at some of the interesting things that occurred over the course of the 2008 season as well as make a few resolutions of our own for 2009.
2008 Year in Review (an aptly truncated version)
In a season when we experienced less than desirable weather and some not so great economics there was still many things to fondly remember.
- Canadian’s triumph at the newly redesigned (well, better marketed) RBC Canadian Open. The boys at Quagmire Golf capture exposure lightning in a bottle as Chez Reavie wins at Glen Abbey. Read the story >>
- Sean Foley is named Ontario PGA Teacher of the Year in 2008 in addition to signing on to coach PGA Tour winners Hunter Mahan and Parker McLachlin. This is in addition to his coaching duties with Stephen Ames and others. Read Sean’s ‘behind the ropes’ anecdotes as he reports into GolfScene on his tour perspective >>
- our summer Magazine was a ‘green’ issue which took a look at some of the environmental issues affecting the golf industry and we were very fortunate to get some interesting and astute answers from varying persons / perspectives. A special thanks to all those who contributed and to all of the readers who appreciated the editorial direction. We have provided a short excerpt of that article [here]. For the rest of the article as well as others we hope you had a chance to get a copy.
- 3 new area courses were opened for play in 2008 >> | and another was ‘re-launched’ to many accolades >>
- Wayne Gretzky’s Nationwide Tour event launches successfully and highlights a great area to visit and play >>
- Jim Morton of London was the very lucky winner of our most recent contest. His lesson in geometry is complete >> . It was also nice to receive a video of another past contest winner who, along with 3 friends, enjoyed a great ‘complimentary’ vacation in Myrtle Beach.
- the GolfScene Tour survived the weather to have another successful season. Congratulations to the winners and to all of those who participated in 2008.
- a couple of really interesting books were released by local writers covering completely different ends of the age / golf spectrum. Turn the pages >>
- there were 12 great tips put forward by members of the Ontario PGA (our games are getting better). Get better now >>
A few of our resolutions for 2009
- play more golf (no excuses, no procrastinations, no economic worries, rain or shine, you’ll find us on the course)
- watch some great golf in person — Canadian Open (Oakville) | Wayne Gretzky Classic (Collingwood) | Jane Rogers Championship (Mississauga) | Seaforth Country Classic (Seaforth) | Canadian Tour Championship (St Catharines)
- take a lesson (or two) – think we’ll finally listen to the pundits and actually work on that short game (and yes we will extend this thought process to print with a few great tips to improve around the greens)
- introduce someone to the game – make that introduce 3 new people to the game (hey, at the very least we’ll create a foursome we can beat)
- purchase one of those ultralight bow and arrow type bags (2009 is about getting lighter)
- walk to the first tee (see above)
- wear enviro-friendly attire
- finish every putt (no more gimmes – think we need to hear more of that sound of the ball falling into the cup)
- repair an extra ball mark per green in regulation
- practice sand shots in our bare feet
- forward this eNews and other interesting golf to more friends to help grow the game
- always remember that errant shots are still fun

There is lots of great golf coming to the area this summer. Come out and watch - atmosphere is everything.
anyway, those are just a few …
