Just a quick but sincere note to all of our readers before we break for the holidays. First and foremost we’d like to say, thank-you. We appreciate your support, your comments, your loyal readership, and your time. All of which are very valuable – thanks. For those who follow the publication, you will know that it has been a trying year for all of us associated with the publication in 2011. In late August, golf lost a friend and... [Read More...]
Still the King of Swing
Pretty nice article in Adage about Arnold Palmer’s business interests. His classic cool look will be showcased in a retro clothing line called “Arnie,” set to launch in February. Three upscale collections will feature styles he wore in the “50s (small collars and short plackets), “60s (wider-legged pants and collars) and “70s (more subdued colors). Mr. Palmer’s company was “looking for a young, fresh... [Read More...]
Quails of a feather …
“[The member] came up to me and said, ‘Our hat policy is the same as Augusta’s. Turn your hat around.’” Ricky Fowler – article in WEI UNDER PAR Apparently, the membership at Quail Hollow is quite upset with the fact that Rickie Fowler wears his hat backwards. The non-story is here. I just like the comment by this reader – which is about as poignant as it gets nowadays in the golf industry. Thanks – ‘Hollow Member’... [Read More...]
Look Beyond the Black Horse
This might just be a day to remember if you’re a golf ball enthusiast. A decade ago, Nike changed the way golf balls were manufactured – from a wound core to a solid core – and it appears that they are ready to tilt the tables once again with the release of the 20XI. Rubbin’ is racing and rubber is resin. You can catch up on the technology here. I played the ball during a round in Portland earlier this year. Actually... [Read More...]
I Knew I Saw her Somewhere
Spain’s Beatriz Recari recently won the CVS / Pharmacy LPGA Challenge. The 23-year-old Recari, a tour rookie who made cuts in only three of her first 13 stroke-play events this season, finished with a 14-under 274 to capture her first LPGA Tour title. Pretty conclusive stuff to win as a rookie. What’s not so conclusive is how her acting career is going. Or, should we say how Eliza Dushku’s short game is shaping up? Confused... [Read More...]
Proof is in the Putter
Here’s a rather curious – and pretty poignant – lift, clean , and place from the post win interview of the 2010 FedEx Cup winner Jim Furyk. Curious, in an ironic sense, with respect to the seemingly polar opposite approach taken by public relations teams / marketing strategists these days that centers almost entirely around the absolute importance of both the newest technology and precision fitting. And or that all too common... [Read More...]
Notebook : Adam Hadwin
Abbotsford, BC’s Adam Hadwin may have been a rookie on the Canadian Tour but being Top 5 in the ‘Order of Merit’ meant an exemption into the Canadian Open which translated into a 68,66,70, and 71 (-5) at St George’s – good enough for a share of 37th place, $19,890 and the Rivermead Cup as low Canadian. When Canadian Adam Hadwin teed it up on Thursday of the Canadian Open there was barely a sound – our guess is... [Read More...]
Notebook: Canadian Open 2010
Sweden’s Carl Pettersson put the finishing touches on this year’s championship with a tidy 67 to follow his somewhat unfathomable 60 on Saturday. These two scores coming after he had made the weekend right on the cutline. This marks his 4th win on the PGA Tour. With the win, Sweden becomes the ninth country to claim a champion at our national open. The other countries are Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, New Zealand, Scotland, South... [Read More...]
Notebook: Mike Weir Charity Classic
Spent the better part of Monday down at St George’s for the opening day of the tournament week and what is now (in its second year) the annual Mike Weir Charity Classic. It was a great weather day – perhaps a little humid at times – but not all that interesting. Equipped with a camera and a hand held recording device – which, in hindsight, I could have left behind (more on that later) I retained a few mental notes (and... [Read More...]
Testing the New X-24 Hot Irons from Callaway
Spent an hour or so on the range the other day with Callaway’s new X-24 ‘Hot’ Irons. The marketing states that these are are designed to produce faster ball speeds across the clubface – translation – increased distance from each club. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing chairs over on this day so any real attempt to gauge distance was futile at best. I did bring along an 8 iron of my own for a general comparison... [Read More...]
Reader Email : Two Issues
I have played sports at a high level all my life and still do ( lacrosse, weight lifting, martial arts ). I started golf as a game to be played with family and friends since my life is pretty busy and required something a little less testosterone related. My two issues are: Why must we be paired up? More people on the course is more money but I don’t want to play with complete strangers when I need to spend time with my wife or other family... [Read More...]
Notebook: Scotty Cameron
Listening in on a Master Had the unique opportunity to attend a Scotty Cameron workshop during the PGA of America’s annual merchandise show. The chat was about an hour . Unfortunately he had to leave immediately afterwards and couldn’t answer any direct questions (and I had more than a few), but it was an informative sixty minutes and below are a few notes: Scotty Cameron was born in 1962 in Glendale, California. He now resides in... [Read More...]
