Temperatures are Rising
We’re at the midway point of the golf season here in Ontario. The weather has been dry and the mercury is rising. Hope all of you are getting in a few extra rounds to make up for the poor weather we endured during the early part of the season. This is the time to get and play – so I’ll keep this brief. It really is a great time of year isn’t it? Season is in full swing. The Open Championship is on. Unfortunately,... [Read More...]
Game On
Well here we are into early June and the golf season is – dare we say – finally in full swing. Enough about the weather already - 77% of our readers played in May. Those were the results of our last online poll. A little wonky spring weather didn’t scare off our readers nor should it frighten off any true golfer – we’re Canadians! – that would be akin to saying it’s too cold to play hockey. Moving... Mutiny and the Muny
In 1998, city courses were used for 180,000 rounds of golf; by last year the number had dropped to 95,000. excerpt from – Municipal courses head for the 19th hole – Globe And Mail Are city-owned golf courses doomed? I read an article recently in the Globe and Mail about city-owned golf courses in Winnipeg being evaluated after it was announced that the courses are $8 million dollars in debt and losing $1million each year. Which ed me... [Read More...]
Centre of Gravity Golf lands at Rebel Creek
Over the years I’ve met many golf teaching professionals, some great, some good, some not so good and many carbon copies. Rob Bernard works on the 'fun'damentals with a student at Rebel Creek. Things like properly gripping a golf club, figuring out where to place your feet, your posture, the takeaway, the follow-through, putting stance etc. are, to most , all fairly straightforward and simple things to learn. And therefore should be fairly... [Read More...]

Ever thought of spreading your wings and driving a few kilometers for a new and different golf experience? Well, GolfScene is going to try and help you by making this one of our priorities in 2011 across south-central Ontario. One for the Ages
Jack Nicklaus and the 1986 Masters Recently, while watching the television coverage of the 2011 Masters, I was taken by the continual reference to the stunning victory at the same event 25 years earlier by Jack Nicklaus, at the age of 46. Being the curious type that I am, I thought I’d find out more, since I don’t remember too much about it. Remember, it was 25 years ago and sometime I can’t remember my golf score from last week! Ironically,... [Read More...]
Masters Week Is Frantic
Every year around this time, things get frantic. Yes, it’s Masters week. And even though, as a regional, we don’t cover it directly – with it comes the opening of courses in the region, the launches of new products, and a general anticipation for the upcoming season. For anyone in the golf business this translates into the busiest time of the year. First the eNews This April’s eNews brings the final challenge in our Oak Bay... [Read More...]
Spring is in the Air
Dropped in today at The Guelph Lakes Golf Club, just outside of Guelph, Ontario. It is ‘Member Appreciation Day’ and a good turn-out of golfers, all anxiously awaiting that first day of golf showed up at the course to meet the staff, the owners, talk golf and get a few tips from the teaching professional. Despite the bitterly cold day and still lots of snow on the ground, the sun was shining and the golfers were all in a good spirits, ‘talking... [Read More...]
Will this be a Good Golf Season?
FROM THE PUBLISHER: As I write this eNews intro / post – from the sunny climes of Antigua – (isn’t technology grand), I am trying my best to stay away from the computer, the telephone and the snowy weather long enough to take in some sun, relax with my wife, and think a little bit about the upcoming 2011 golf season, which is sneaking up rather quickly. I believe this is going to be a good year, despite some of the naysayers in the... [Read More...]

Now This is Cool, Literally.
Brad Duench, the Managing Partner at the Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge certainly doesn’t take the winter off. He and his entire Whistle Bear staff have tried something new, and very different for a golf course. With full support of their owners, they planned and organized a two-day “Pond Hockey” Tournament for golf course members and their guests. They strategically positioned the tournament over the two day Super Bowl weekend in order... [Read More...]
Welcome to 2011
Let me start the New Year by straying a little bit off topic and by quickly getting something off my chest. Hockey, the other sport. It’s just a game! Russia 5 Canada 3. So what! The Russian team on that particular evening was simply the better team. They scored five goals to Canada’s three. This happens every night during the hockey season and at every level of the game. It seems to me that the Canadian team was so ‘programmed’ to play a... [Read More...]
